Love Spain’s bar culture? These 20 towns and cities have the most per person – including three on the Costa del Sol

Spain’s famous bar culture draws millions of tourists per year, but new figures reveal the phenomenon is alive and well in places you might not expect.

An interactive map from Accumin, part of the property valuation group Tinsa, reveals which towns and cities pack the most bars per resident.

According to the dataset, Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Marbella all sit among Spain’s 10 most bar-dense municipalities with more than 50,000 residents.

Four locations in Andalucia make it into Spain’s top 20 bar-dense towns and cities – more than any other region.

Fuengirola ranks highest at 5th, with 11.5 bars per 1,000 residents, followed by Torremolinos in 8th place with 10.3.

Marbella sits just behind in 9th, offering 9.9 bars per 1,000, a reflection of its year-round tourism and nightlife.

Further down the list, Granada appears in 14th position with 8.4 bars per 1,000 inhabitants, showing that Andalucia’s bar culture thrives not only on the coast but also in one of its most historic inland cities.

Accumin defines ‘bar’ broadly, including anything from cafes and ice cream shops to restaurants and traditional cervecerías. In other words, anywhere you can sit down for a coffee or a beer counts.

Spain as a whole averages one bar for every 207 people, a figure that would be unthinkable in most European countries.

While large cities have thousands of bars, their density per person is lower simply because of their huge populations. Barcelona is the only major capital to break into the top 20, with 7.7 bars per 1,000 residents.

Here’s how Spain’s big capitals compare:

In Madrid, for example, more than 21,400 bars serve over 3.4 million people, offering plenty of choice, but spread thinly compared with smaller tourist-heavy towns.

At the other extreme, provinces such as Soria, Palencia, Ávila and Burgos have the highest number of municipalities with zero bars, in a stark reflection of Spain’s rural depopulation.
