Mercadona currently has hundreds of job applications across Spain, with salaries reaching up to €2,280 per month.
Spain’s largest supermarket chain launched a revamped job portal in July, making it easier than ever for job seekers to apply, track applications, and receive tailored offers based on their preferences.
The company is hiring in areas ranging from logistics and IT to online shopping and in-store roles.
What kind of jobs are on offer?
In its supermarkets, Mercadona is mainly recruiting for part-time and full-time roles (typically 15, 20, or 40 hours per week), covering positions such as cashiers, shelf stackers, shop assistants, delivery drivers and maintenance technicians.
- 15-hour contracts offer between €632 and €855 gross per month
- 20-hour contracts range from €843 to €1,140 gross
- Full-time roles (40 hours/week) start at €1,685, rising to €2,280 gross per month after four years
Entry-level in-store staff on full-time contracts are paid €1,685 gross per month from day one, a competitive figure for the sector.
Those who stay with the company for four or more years can expect to hit the top end of the pay scale.
For more technical or specialist roles, such as refrigeration technicians or IT positions in Mercadona Tech, the requirements and salaries scale up significantly. A “Modern Workplace Technician”, for example, earns between €35,550 and €43,700 gross per year.
How hard is it to get in?
Mercadona doesn’t require university degrees for most supermarket positions, but it does set some basic criteria:
- Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) is required for most jobs
- A valid driver’s licence (held for at least one year) is necessary for delivery roles
- For technical roles, relevant qualifications and experience are essential
Beyond qualifications, the company places a strong emphasis on cultural fit. Applicants who align with Mercadona’s values – responsibility, customer focus, and teamwork – are more likely to succeed.
While the roles do not demand much experience, competition is extremely fierce.
Many young Spaniards want to work at Mercadona due to its high starter salary, this includes students who want to work part-time, or those inbetween jobs.
Many also see it as a genuine career path given the company’s great benefits and high level of job security.
What do Brits need to be hired?
For Brits wanting a job there, it means they will have to show they can do the job just as efficiently as any other Spaniard applying, and that means, mostly, fluent Spanish.
British nationals can apply for Mercadona jobs as long as they have the legal right to work in Spain.
That means holding a valid NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) and residency status.
Fluency in Spanish is essential for customer-facing roles, and Mercadona requires a strong command of written and spoken Spanish across most positions, especially those involving teamwork or coordination with suppliers and clients.
If you’re thinking of applying, you can create a profile on their job portal, highlight any relevant experience, and make sure to communicate why you’re a good fit for Mercadona’s team-first culture.
