A 76-year-old woman has died after becoming trapped in a wheelchair lift at her home on the Costa Blanca.
The tragic accident happened on Wednesday at a detached villa located on the slopes of the Montgo mountain.
According to local reports, the victim, a German national who suffered from mobility problems, regularly attached her wheelchair to the lift mechanism in order to navigate a flight of steps on the property.
Trapped against the house
For reasons that are still being investigated, the woman fell halfway up the stairlift and became trapped.
She was repeatedly crushed against the façade of the house, causing her to scream.
Neighbours raised the alarm, sparking an emergency response involving firefighters, Local Police and a SAMU ambulance crew.
Despite their efforts, the woman died at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances surrounding the accident, although the case is expected to be investigated as an accidental death.
