The skies are being lit up across southern Spain by a series of extremely intense storms.

Footage shared on social media shows lightning bolts flashing above Marbella, Fuengirola and much of the southern region.

Expats commenting on the clips said they had ‘never seen anything like it before.’

The freak weather for mid June is being caused by a so-called DANA weather system.

State weather agency Aemet has issued a series of alerts which will begin at midnight tonight.

The Costa del Sol, Guadalhorce Valley, and entire provinces of Sevilla and Cadiz are all on a yellow alert for fierce storms until midday on Wednesday.

Heavy rainfall is also expected to fall overnight across Andalucia, including the Costa del Sol.
