This is moment heavy rain and storms sparked localised flooding and a river surge in the province of Almeria on Thursday.
According to the South-Eastern Meteorological Association (AMETSE), the hardest-hit town was Cuevas del Almanzora, which recorded around 40 litres per square metre of rainfall.
The storm had started out relatively mild but intensified throughout the day, dumping large amounts of rainfall on inland areas, particularly Almanzora and Los Velez.
Behind Cuevas del Almanzora, the next-highest totals were logged in Velez-Rubio (39 litres) and Tijola (34 litres).
Armuña del Almanzora and Chirivel both topped 30 litres, while Macael received 28.
Further along the Almanzora valley, Purchena logged 25 litres, Sufli 23, and Olula del Rio 20.
Cuevas del Almanzora bore the brunt not just of the rainfall but of the resulting road damage.
The AL-8104 highway was closed to traffic entirely, while the AL-7107 saw rocks falling onto the carriageway.
State weather agency Aemet had the eastern Almeria coast under an orange alert for much of the morning before downgrading it to yellow in the afternoon, with forecasts warning of up to 15 litres per square metre in a single hour and as much as 40 litres over 12 hours.
That yellow alert later extended to cover the Almanzora and Los Velez valley, the Nacimiento and Tabernas basin, and the western part of the province including the capital, Almeria city.
As a precaution, in-person classes were suspended on Thursday in Pulpi, Huercal-Overa, and Cuevas del Almanzora, where parks and public gardens were also ordered closed.
