Ferran Torres has sparked a fierce debate online after breaking his silence on the MAGA-style cap controversy.
Spain’s World Cup hero sat down with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins to discuss life following his country’s victory over Argentina last month.
It wasn’t long before she brought up the controversial red cap Torres wore during the World Cup celebrations, which read ‘Make Spain Great Again’.
At the time, fans were confused as to whether Torres was endorsing Trump’s MAGA movement or mocking it.
When Collins asked him why he wore it, Torres said: ‘It was a funny moment, because it was not about politics, because honestly I don’t know about politics…
‘It was just to be able to see Spain again, on the top, to win the World Cup, it was just to have fun with my friends and with my family and nothing about politics and nothing about this.’
While some fans considered the question answered, many commented on the clip to say it was not ‘good enough’ of an explanation.
‘A grown man and a millionaire knows nothing about politics, oh, okay,’ one said sarcastically.
‘You can’t wear make (whatever) great again hat and pretend it has nothing to do with politics,’ another said.
One wrote: ‘Those who claim to know nothing about politics develop excellent practices to use their patriotism to, for example, avoid paying taxes or change their tax residency; in other words, they tend to be quite right-wing and lacking in solidarity.’
Another commented: ‘It’s not good enough to say ‘I don’t know about politics’, what privilege to not have to care about it!’
