A tourist has been arrested after allegedly spending 10 days enjoying hotels and restaurants across Benidorm without paying a single euro.

The 50-year-old man is accused of checking into various hotels, eating meals and using hospitality services throughout the resort without settling any of the bills.

His free holiday came to an abrupt end when Benidorm Local Police tracked him down and arrested him on suspicion of fraud.

According to investigators, the suspect spent more than a week moving between different establishments, where he allegedly slept, ate and enjoyed the city’s hospitality without paying for any of the services he received.

Police joked that the tourist travelled ‘light on luggage and light on wallet’ during his 10-day stint.

He has now been arrested on suspicion of fraud for allegedly obtaining accommodation and restaurant services without paying.

Benidorm Local Police also used the case to issue a tongue-in-cheek warning to anyone considering attempting the same trick.

‘If this is your travel option in Benidorm, we’d like to inform you that we have a special accommodation package available,’ officers said, referring to a stay in the police cells for anyone hoping to enjoy the resort without paying their way.

Police have not revealed exactly how the suspect managed to spend 10 days moving between hotels and restaurants without paying.

However, in Spain it is not uncommon for hotels to allow guests to settle their bill at check-out after taking identification and a card as a guarantee, rather than charging the full amount on arrival.

It means he may have left a fake card and left before checking out, or employed another method.

The fact he stayed at multiple establishments suggests he may have repeated the same tactic several times, rather than targeting a single hotel throughout his stay.
