The man accused of shooting a lawyer at point-blank range in Almeria has been arrested aboard a train following a four-day manhunt.

Almeria’s Provincial Police, working alongside the Policia Nacional, detained the suspect at around 5.50pm on Sunday.

The suspect, reported to be an illegal migrant from Morocco, was travelling on a train bound for Alicante.

Investigators described the man as dangerous and believed he may have still been armed when he was tracked down using what police called their ‘latest technological resources’.

The shooting took place on Wednesday morning in Calle Granada in El Ejido, after emergency services received reports that a woman had been shot.

The victim, a lawyer of Moroccan origin, was struck by a bullet from what investigators say was a .32 calibre pistol.

Initial reports suggested she had suffered only minor injuries, but police have since confirmed she remains in hospital in a serious condition with a guarded prognosis.

Detectives believe the attack was an act of revenge after the suspect allegedly lost a court case involving a client represented by the lawyer.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the suspect expected to face a charge of aggravated attempted murder as well as allegations of making serious threats against a former employer.

Police are also working to establish how the attack was planned, where the firearm came from and whether anyone assisted him during his attempted escape.

Following the shooting, the Almeria Bar Association issued its ‘strongest and most absolute condemnation’ of the attack and expressed its full support for the injured lawyer.

The association’s dean, Juan Luis de Aynat, said it had remained in close contact with the victim since the incident and had conveyed the solidarity and support of the province’s legal profession.
