Pedro Sanchez has predicted a progressive comeback in Spain after celebrating Lula da Silva’s election victory in Brazil.
The Spanish prime minister linked the result to his own campaign ahead of Spain’s snap general election on November 29.
‘A great victory for Lula da Silva! What has happened in Brazil will happen in Spain. The comeback of global progressivism has only just begun,’ Sanchez wrote on X.
Lula secured a fourth presidential term after defeating Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, in Sunday’s second-round vote.
The Workers’ Party leader received 51.79% of the vote against Bolsonaro’s 48.21%.
That amounted to approximately 64.2 million votes for Lula and 59.8 million for his rival, representing a margin of around 4.4 million.
Bolsonaro has said he will challenge the result.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen also congratulated Lula, describing the outcome as a victory for democracy and multilateralism.
‘Europe’s partnership with Brazil is flourishing. We will continue to stand by your side in the years ahead,’ she wrote.
European Council president Antonio Costa said he had spoken to Lula by telephone to congratulate him on his re-election.
He described the EU and Brazil as strong partners and pledged continued cooperation on global challenges.
