Doctors at one of Andalucia’s busiest hospitals are using World Allergy Week to raise awareness of the growing impact allergies have on daily life and the importance of seeking specialist treatment.
The Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena has set up an information point to provide advice on allergic conditions, including how to manage allergic reactions, use medication correctly and understand treatments such as immunotherapy and allergy testing.
The initiative forms part of World Allergy Week, organised by the World Allergy Organisation and supported by the World Health Organisation under the slogan ‘Allergy care is essential care’.
Specialists from the hospital’s Allergy Unit are informing patients about the most common allergies, their symptoms, available treatments and the importance of early diagnosis.
The scale of demand for allergy services in Sevilla alone is significant. During 2025 alone, the hospital’s Allergy Unit handled more than 25,000 consultations, including around 6,400 first-time patients.
A further 6,000 patients received treatment through the unit’s day hospital service, while specialists carried out more than 5,300 diagnostic tests.
The department has developed dedicated teams focusing on severe asthma, food allergies, drug allergies, skin and eye conditions, immunodeficiencies and rare disorders such as angioedema.
It also runs specialist immunotherapy and biological treatment programmes, with almost 2,000 patients currently receiving advanced therapies designed to reduce or control allergic reactions.
The hospital says it continues to expand services for patients with complex allergic conditions while maintaining nationally recognised quality standards awarded by the Sociedad Española de Alergología e Inmunología Clínica.
Alongside patient care, the unit remains heavily involved in scientific research and is participating in regional and national projects aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases.
Health experts say allergies are becoming increasingly common worldwide, making early specialist assessment and tailored treatment more important than ever.
