A body in an advanced state of decomposition has been recovered from the sea off Granada province, just days after another corpse was found floating along the same stretch of coastline.
The latest discovery was made on Thursday at Playa de Cambriles, a beach between the municipalities of Lujar and Gualchos-Castell de Ferro.
Emergency services were alerted at around 12.20pm after a witness spotted the body floating approximately 10 metres from the shoreline.
The incident was confirmed by Andalucía’s 112 emergency service, while the Guardia Civil, which is leading the investigation, carried out the recovery operation.
Officers from the Guardia Civil, Local Police and medical teams from the Andalucian Health Service attended the scene.
Following the retrieval of the body, judicial protocols were activated and an investigation launched.
Authorities have not yet released any details regarding the victim’s identity, age, sex or nationality.
The grim discovery comes just days after another decomposed body was found floating in the sea off Almuñecar, further along Granada’s coastline.
That body was recovered on Monday morning by a Guardia Civil maritime patrol vessel operating in the area.
In that case, the deceased was reportedly wearing a wetsuit and was also found in an advanced state of decomposition.
Both bodies have been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine, where forensic experts will carry out autopsies and other examinations in an attempt to establish the causes of death and identify the victims.
Investigators have not indicated whether there is any connection between the two cases.
The investigation continues.
