Local police in Murcia have paid their respects to a young swimmer who died on the rocks of a Murcia beach this week.
A blurred footage shared online shows multiple emergency workers surrounding the 29-year-old.
The Policia Local de Mazarron said: ‘Despite the efforts of the emergency services, Mazarron Local Police, Guardia Civil, and UME Mazarron, it was not possible to save the life of a 29-year-old man on Percheles beach.
‘Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.’
The tragic incident unfolded at around 4.05pm on Wednesday, when emergency services received reports of a swimmer struggling in the water off Playa de Percheles in Mazarron.
Multiple Spanish newspapers claimed that the victim was British and aged 25.
However, authorities have not confirmed the nationality and have now declared his age as 29.
One British witness told the Spanish Eye that she saw it all unfold from the beach, where she had been enjoying a day out with her husband.
‘Three Moroccan friends were on the beach and two of them went in for a swim, the waves were really high and strong,’ she told this news outlet.
‘The two lads got into difficulty and one was able to make it back to shore. The other sadly went under.
‘My husband had rang 112 while noticing the boys in difficulty… we are English speaking… perhaps that was the confusion.
‘A very brave Spanish man had gone in to try and recover the lad and he was lucky he didn’t also get into trouble.

‘The Spanish lad along with his friend was able to secure the young chap and bystanders pulled him up from the sea.
‘The rocks made it very difficult, however they manage to perform CPR along with my husband until the police and other medics arrived.
‘The bravery of those Spanish lads was commendable. Sadly the lad lost his life.’
The Guardia Civil did not respond to the Spanish Eye despite repeated attempts for comment.
