The Costa del Sol is edging closer to completing one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects, with the famous coastal path now 90% finished.
Malaga has announced €1.3 million in funding for new sections of the Senda Litoral in Mijas and Benalmadena, helping to extend the pedestrian route that will eventually connect almost the entire coastline of Malaga province.
The Senda Litoral has become one of the Costa del Sol’s flagship projects, creating a continuous walking route along the seafront while improving beach access and protecting coastal environments.
During visits to both municipalities, Malaga Provincial Council president Francisco Salado said the project has reached 90% completion across the province.
He revealed that nearly €16million has been invested over the past decade, funding 44 separate projects in 11 coastal municipalities.
Salado stressed that the route offers more than just tourism benefits, helping to improve environmental management, organise beach access points and encourage sustainable mobility along the coastline.

New Mijas section nearing completion
In Mijas, Salado and mayor Ana Mata visited a recently completed 700-metre stretch linking La Cala de Mijas with Restaurante Sherif.
Work is also continuing on a further 2.3km section between Restaurante El Faro and the Fuengirola municipal boundary, which is expected to be completed by mid-June.
The project, awarded by Mijas Town Hall for €4.1 million and co-funded by the provincial authority with €1 million, includes the reconstruction of areas damaged by landslides, repairs to unstable sections of coastline and environmental restoration work.
The route will also feature improved accessibility, upgraded promenade infrastructure and extensive wooden boardwalks, alongside elevated walkways and cantilevered sections designed to blend into the surrounding landscape.
One remaining gap of just over 2km between Restaurante Sherif and El Faro is still being studied by Spain’s coastal authority.
Benalmadena to add Carvajal beach stretch
Meanwhile, Benalmadena is preparing to tender a new €318,000 project at Carvajal beach.
The scheme will create a 435-metre section between the Kalifato beach bar and the stepped access ramp linking the beach to Avenida del Sol.
As well as improving the existing coastal path, the project will enhance access for emergency and cleaning vehicles.
A separate council-led project is also progressing through technical review stages and will focus on repairing the cliff area known as Las Tres Carabelas and sections of the coastal walkway between Torrequebrada and La Viborilla.
Once completed, the Senda Litoral will allow residents and visitors to walk almost the entire length of Malaga province’s coastline, creating one of the longest continuous seaside pedestrian routes in Spain.
