Spanish police have arrested a young man in Tarifa accused of becoming highly radicalised in support of ISIS and swearing allegiance to the terror group.
The suspect, described by investigators as a young convert to Islam, was detained on Monday by officers from the Policia Nacional’s intelligence division.
Authorities say he is being investigated for alleged membership of a terrorist organisation, glorification of terrorism, self-radicalisation, extremist indoctrination and attempting to radicalise others.
According to investigators, the suspect had become increasingly obsessed with jihadist terrorism and particularly admired mass-casualty attacks carried out across Europe.
Police claim he showed a ‘deep hatred’ towards Spain and Spanish citizens and had a particular fascination with the 2016 Nice terror attack in France, in which 86 people were killed after an ISIS-inspired terrorist drove a truck through crowds celebrating Bastille Day.
Investigators say the suspect had fully embraced the ideology promoted by ISIS and had allegedly pledged loyalty to the organisation.
During a raid on his home carried out on the day of his arrest, officers seized what police described as a large amount of jihadist propaganda material along with numerous electronic devices.
Those devices are still being analysed by specialists.
The operation was led by Spain’s General Commissariat of Information together with the intelligence brigade in nearby Algeciras.
The investigation was coordinated by Spain’s National Court and anti-terror prosecutors.
The suspect appeared before a judge on Wednesday, who ordered that he be remanded in custody pending further investigation.
