A regional train travelling between Malaga and Sevilla broke down inside a tunnel on Sunday, causing major disruption and delays across the line.
According to Adif, the medium-distance train suffered a failure in its self-propulsion system while travelling between El Chorro-Caminito del Rey and Gobantes in Malaga province.
The incident occurred at around 6pm on one of the busiest stretches of the route near Caminito del Rey, the famous gorge walkway and tourist attraction.
Initial updates from Adif on social media said the convoy became stranded while operating between Malaga Maria Zambrano station and Sevilla Santa Justa.
The breakdown forced other medium-distance services to remain stopped at stations while railway operators worked to resolve the issue.
Passengers travelling between Malaga and Sevilla experienced delays as rail traffic on the line was disrupted.
At around 7pm, Adif confirmed the incident had been resolved and that the damaged train had managed to resume its journey.
Rail services gradually returned to normal afterwards, although several trains remained affected by knock-on delays.
It comes amid increased scrutiny of Spain’s railway following the deadly Adamuz disaster in Andalucia in January that cost 46 lives.
Since then, a bearing wall has collapsed in Alora, Malaga, which took several months to repair and left the high-speed Malaga to Madrid route out of operation until very recently.
