An 80-year-old woman has died after her body was found floating face down in the sea off a beach in Malaga on Thursday morning.
Emergency services were alerted at around 10.40am after reports that a person had been spotted in the water off El Palo, in the eastern part of Malaga city.
The woman was seen floating face down near a buoy, beyond the breakwaters opposite Calle Banda del Mar, reports local newspaper La Opinion de Malaga.
Several people rushed to recover her from the water, including lifeguards who are currently on strike amid an ongoing dispute with the company contracted to provide the service.
One rescuer swam out and managed to bring the woman towards the rocks but was reportedly exhausted by the effort.
Others then came to his aid and initially attempted to place the woman onto a board before a jet ski was used to help bring her back to shore.
Paramedics were unable to save the woman and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her body has been transferred to Malaga’s Institute of Legal Medicine, where a post-mortem examination will determine the cause of death.
