Police in Marbella have arrested a suspected pyromaniac after a series of fires broke out in one of the Costa del Sol’s most exclusive residential areas.
According to police sources cited by Malaga Hoy, the suspect allegedly spent around €2,000 on high-powered fireworks before setting off the explosive devices across the luxury Los Manchones area in upper Nagüeles on Monday afternoon.
Authorities believe the fireworks sparked a wildfire that burned between 300 and 400 square metres of woodland.
Hours later, during the evening, residents again alerted police after reportedly spotting the same man wandering through the area before fleeing.
Investigators later seized part of the pyrotechnic material allegedly linked to the incident.
Police said the fireworks involved were large explosive devices containing significant quantities of gunpowder and legally sold only to adults over 18.
According to sources, the suspect – said to be an Italian national – lives in the wealthy Coto Real urbanisation.
Investigators also believe the man may suffer from mental health problems.
A private security guard reportedly played a key role in helping officers identify and locate the suspect entering his home shortly after the incidents.
The case has intensified after four vehicles were also destroyed by fire the same night on the road to Istan in what police suspect may have been a second deliberate attack.
According to initial investigations, all four vehicles ignited almost simultaneously close to residential properties, causing alarm among neighbours.
When Local Police officers arrived at the scene, the cars were already engulfed in flames.
Authorities are now investigating whether both incidents are connected and whether the fires may be linked to personal disputes involving the suspect and third parties.
The investigation remains ongoing.
