A couple from Cadiz erupted in anger as Spain’s Congress voted down a rental law that would have extended their contract for another two years.
According to Andalucia politician Jose Ignacio Garcia, the pair are from Jerez and are facing eviction from their home.
Garcia, from Adelante Andalucia, said in a post on X: ‘The couple who have been expelled from Congress are two Andalucians from Jerez.
‘A vulture fund wants to evict them from their home. There are 34 Andalucian deputies from PP and VOX who deserve to suffer an eviction.’
The confrontation comes after Spain’s Congress rejected a decree that aimed to extend expiring rental contracts by two years and cap annual rent increases.
The measure, backed by the government, was designed as a temporary safeguard for tenants struggling with rising housing costs.
It would have applied to contracts ending between March 2026 and December 2027.
However, the proposal failed to pass after being voted down by the Partido Popular, Vox and the Catalan party Junts, while the Basque Nationalist Party abstained.
What happens now for tenants
With the law no longer in force, thousands of renters across Spain, including the couple from Jerez, face uncertainty.
Those who requested an extension while the decree was briefly active may still have some legal protection, but experts warn that many cases could end up in court due to the unclear legal situation.
For others, landlords are no longer bound by the proposed two-year extension, meaning evictions or rent increases could proceed under existing rules.
The government has insisted it will try again to pass similar measures, but divisions between parties remain deep, leaving tenants caught in the middle.
