A man has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in connection with the death of his mother, a 66-year-old woman found dead at her home in inland Malaga last month.
The victim, named locally as Edurne, was discovered in Cartama on March 2 after her son himself alerted emergency services, claiming he had found her lifeless inside the property.
However, investigators quickly turned their attention to him after identifying inconsistencies in his account of events.
According to sources, the suspect became nervous when questioned about his movements in the hours leading up to the discovery, with his version of events raising ‘numerous suspicions’ among officers.
From the outset, the case was treated as a violent death. The woman had suffered a severe blow to the head, which was determined to be the cause of death.
The suspect initially suggested the possibility of a violent robbery, telling police the house had been ransacked and that jewellery was missing.
But investigators reportedly found gaps and contradictions in his explanation, which ultimately led to his arrest.
Authorities have ruled out the case as one of gender-based violence.
The investigation continues.
