An man in his 80s shot himself in the head on Tuesday morning in Torremolinos as a court eviction team arrived to repossess his home following a mortgage foreclosure.
The incident took place at a property near the entrance to the town, in the area of the old orphanage.
According to sources cited by EFE, the man had been unable to keep up with his mortgage payments, and the property had been auctioned off to cover the debt.
When the deadline for vacating the premises expired, a judicial commission, accompanied by local police officers, representatives of the new owner, and a locksmith, arrived at the home to carry out the official repossession.
As the team rang the doorbell and attempted to open the door, the man, who had remained inside, turned the gun on himself.
Police officers forced entry immediately after hearing the shot and found the pensioner still breathing.
Emergency services were called, and the man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries.
The incident has reignited concern in Spain about the human toll of evictions, particularly among elderly homeowners living alone and unable to meet increasing housing costs.
