The majority of Spain has been placed under heat warnings over the next few days as a heatwave grips the country.

According to state weather agency Aemet, temperatures are set to reach highs of 42C between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Central and southern areas are set to be the hottest, with Sevilla, Jaen, Cordoba and other parts of inland Andalucia to see the mercury surpass 40C.

All three provinces have been placed under an orange-level alert, alongside a number of central areas, including Madrid.

In Andalucia, inland Cadiz and the coast of Almeria are on a yellow alert on Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs of 39C and 36C expected respectively.

The Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol are among the few regions to be left out of the alerts.

The majority of the heat warnings will remain in place until at least Thursday.
