A series of weather alerts have been issued across southern Spain due to extreme heat.

Temperatures are expected to soar past 40C on Sunday in what will be the hottest day of the year so far in many areas.

According to state weather agency Aemet, the most at risk area is the province of Sevilla, where the mercury will reach 42C.

The province has been placed under an orange alert – the second-most serious after red.

Also under an orange warning for extreme heat is the majority of Huelva province, and parts of Granada, Cordoba and Jaen, with temperatures of up to 40C expected.

Elsewhere, inland areas of Cadiz and Malaga are on a yellow alert for extreme heat, with up to 39C expected.

The coastal areas, including Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz, have avoided being placed under alert.

However, temperatures are expected to reach the 30s on both coasts, meaning people should take extra caution when in the sun.
