A truck driver has died after his vehicle caught on fire and overturned inside a tunnel, trapping him in an inferno.

The horror crash occurred on the AP-7 motorway in Pilar de la Horadada on the Costa Blanca, in the direction of Cartagena.

According to reports, one of the truck’s tyres burst as the vehicle entered the tunnel.

The driver, a 55-year-old man, who was transporting steel pipes, lost control and the truck caught fire. When it overturned on its side, the vehicle became trapped and died.

The combination of flammable materials, including the truck’s own fuel, and the fact that it remained inside the tunnel increased the severity of the fire.

Thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky.

The incident at around 9.56am caused disruptive traffic jams, but firefighters extinguished the flames just before noon.

There were no other reported injuries.
