This is the moment violent summer storms triggered flash flooding in parts of inland Andalucia on Friday.

Videos shared online show how torrential rain and hail battered the Granada town of Puebla de Don Fadrique, leaving homes inundated and roads buried beneath mud and debris.

The fierce downpour struck on Friday evening, dumping 71mm of rain in a short period, according to Granada Provincial Council, after Aemet had placed the area under a thunderstorm warning.

The sheer volume of rain caused two major ravines running through the municipality to burst, sending torrents of water into the town and causing widespread damage to homes, streets and public buildings.

Provincial emergency chief Eduardo Martos said firefighters were deployed immediately alongside the Guardia Civil and Local Police, while the council remained in constant contact with mayor Jesus Fernandez.

The town hall activated its Local Emergency Plan as crews worked through the night to clear flooded streets and ensure residents’ safety.

Images shared by the council show roads transformed into rivers, with thick mud, rocks and debris covering large parts of the town. Several streets and rural access roads also suffered significant damage.

Cleanup operations continued on Saturday as officials began assessing the full extent of the destruction to public infrastructure and agricultural tracks.

Mayor Fernandez thanked firefighters, Local Police, the Guardia Civil, road maintenance crews, municipal workers, local businesses and volunteers for their rapid response, saying their efforts helped prevent the situation from becoming even worse.

Granada Provincial Council has pledged to support the recovery effort, with officials visiting the town on Saturday and promising assistance as damage assessments continue.

The municipality is expected to apply for emergency funding from the Provincial Council, the Junta de Andalucía and the Spanish government to help repair the damage.
