A maintenance train derailed in Sevilla just hours after the Toledo tragedy, forcing the suspension of services on the city’s C4 Cercanias line.
Nobody was injured in the incident, which happened at 8.40pm at Padre Pio-Palmete station, in the La Negrilla area.
The driver was the only person aboard and escaped unharmed, sources at rail infrastructure manager Adif told EFE.
The train was hauling empty material wagons when it derailed during a manoeuvre. The cause has yet to be established.
Adif announced the disruption on social media at 9.40pm, saying the maintenance train’s axles had come off the tracks.
The C4 operates a circular route from Sevilla-Santa Justa, serving Palacio de Congresos, Padre Pío-Palmete, Hospital Virgen del Rocío and San Bernardo before returning to Santa Justa.
Adif said crews were working to resolve the incident as quickly as possible.
The incident came just hours after the deadly collision between two trains in Toledo, which were both headed to Sevilla.
The death toll has risen to 69.
