A young man is fighting for his life in hospital after a car launched off a roundabout and crashed into an apartment building in central Marbella.
The spectacular accident occurred early on Saturday morning (October 10) on Calle Jacinto Benavente, near number 7, leaving two young men injured.
The occupants, aged 22 and 26, are both from Marbella, according to police sources cited by Spanish news agency EFE.
One of the men remains in a critical condition at the Hospital Universitario Costa del Sol, although authorities have not specified which of the two occupants is seriously injured.
According to investigators, the car was travelling at high speed when it crossed a roundabout and was propelled several metres through the air.
Police believe the combination of the vehicle’s speed and the slope of the roundabout caused it to act like a launch ramp.
The car reached a height of around four metres before striking the facade of the residential building.
During its airborne trajectory, the vehicle completely severed a palm tree and smashed a lamppost.
Debris from the broken streetlight was thrown with such force that fragments struck the shutters of apartments on the second floor of the AMI building.
Witnesses said the car rotated approximately 180 degrees in the air before crashing into the building.
It eventually came to rest upside down on the pavement, with all four wheels pointing skywards.
The condition of the second occupant has not been detailed in the latest update.
The accident remains under investigation.
One resident told the Spanish Eye how they were awoken by a huge crashing sound.
They shared pictures taken from their balcony showing the vehicle overturned against a block of flats.
