This is the enormous column of smoke currently engulfing a textile warehouse in Cordoba province amid a devastating fire.
Residents in Cor have been urged to remain indoors and keep their windows closed after the major inferno sent enormous clouds of smoke into the air on Sunday (October 11).
Firefighters and aircraft have been deployed to tackle the blaze, with authorities warning that smoke could affect several nearby towns.
The flames broke out at an industrial warehouse in Palma del Rio, where large quantities of textile materials were being stored.
The building measures approximately 100 metres long and 50 metres wide.
The Junta de Andalucia’s Infoca wildfire service deployed two water-bombing aircraft, an environmental officer and a team of forest firefighters to support the Provincial Fire Brigade Consortium.
According to Cordoba’s provincial government, the fire has now been brought under control, although the burning textile materials continue to produce significant amounts of smoke.
Those experiencing particularly intense smoke have also been urged to avoid physical exercise or strenuous activity outside.
Special attention should be paid to children, elderly residents and people with respiratory conditions, who may be more vulnerable to the effects of smoke inhalation.
Authorities said the warehouse is located in an isolated area, reducing the risk of flames spreading to neighbouring buildings or other infrastructure.
However, the large quantity of textile material inside the premises has complicated efforts to extinguish the blaze completely.
Firefighters are concentrating on containing the perimeter and reducing the intensity of the fire to limit further smoke emissions.
Once conditions allow, two excavators are expected to enter the warehouse from the rear and one side of the building.
The machinery will be used to remove and turn over the accumulated textiles, allowing firefighters to extinguish burning material progressively.
