Millions of residents and tourists across Andalucia are preparing for a three-day weekend as Spain celebrates its National Day.
The public holiday, known as Dia de la Hispanidad or Dia del Pilar, falls on a Monday this year, giving many workers an extended autumn break.
However, anyone planning to stock up on groceries or spend the day shopping should check opening hours before leaving home.
While October 12 is a national public holiday, not every supermarket or shopping centre will be closed.
In fact, many major retail destinations across Andalucia are expected to welcome customers, although opening arrangements vary depending on the chain, location and individual store.
Mercadona
Mercadona supermarkets will be closed across Andalucia on Monday, October 12, in keeping with the company’s usual policy of closing on national public holidays.
Customers needing groceries should check alternative supermarkets.
Carrefour
Selected Carrefour supermarkets will open on October 12, although hours vary between locations.
Customers can check their nearest store using Carrefour’s official holiday opening hours page.
Lidl
Lidl branches are among those expected to open on the public holiday, although individual stores may operate reduced hours.
Opening times can be checked through the Lidl store locator.
Aldi
Aldi supermarkets are also expected to open in a number of Andalucian locations on Monday.
Customers should check their nearest branch using Aldi’s official store finder.
Dia
Some Dia supermarkets will open on October 12, potentially with special holiday hours.
The company advises customers to consult their local branch through the Dia website.
Maskom
Malaga-based supermarket chain Maskom has indicated that stores will open on the holiday, although individual opening times should be checked on its official website.
Eroski
Some Eroski stores may maintain their normal Monday hours, but holiday opening arrangements are not necessarily the same across every branch.
Customers are advised to check their local supermarket before travelling.
Are shopping centres open across Andalucia?

Unlike some public holidays, October 12 is officially designated as an authorised shopping day throughout Andalucia.
The Junta de Andalucia has included the date among the 16 Sundays and public holidays on which larger retail establishments are permitted to open in 2026.
This applies across the region, including Malaga, Sevilla, Cadiz, Granada, Cordoba, Almeria, Huelva and Jaen. However, individual businesses are not obliged to open.
It means shopping centres across the Costa del Sol may also open under the region’s authorised holiday trading rules, including El Corte Ingles.
However, individual opening hours for these centres have not been independently confirmed for October 12, so shoppers should consult their websites before travelling.
