A major air-and-sea search has been launched for a sailing boat carrying one person after it collided with another vessel off the coast of Granada.
The missing yacht, named Laurentia, was sailing towards Gibraltar when the collision occurred around 27 nautical miles (approximately 50km) off Motril.
Spain’s Maritime Rescue service said on Saturday that the two boats had departed Almeria together and were travelling to Gibraltar.
After the collision, their occupants agreed to inspect their respective vessels for damage and then make contact again.
However, the lone sailor aboard the Laurentia failed to respond and the vessel’s whereabouts remain unknown.
The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Almeria is leading the operation.
Two helicopters, the Helimer 211 and Sasemar 308, were deployed alongside a Frontex aircraft.
The rescue boats Gienah and Hamal are searching from the water, together with the search-and-rescue vessel Mastelero.
No information has yet been released about the identity or nationality of the missing sailor.
