A woman has been arrested at Gibraltar International Airport after allegedly attempting to travel to the UK on a fake Lithuanian passport.

The Georgian national, 32, identified by the initials M.K., was intercepted by officers from the Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP) before she reached outbound immigration controls.

The operation was triggered after UK authorities detected anomalies in an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) application submitted by a passenger that afternoon.

The information was passed to Gibraltar authorities, prompting Special Branch officers to identify the woman inside the airport on Wednesday, September 9.

Lithuanian passport allegedly falsified

During the intervention, officers discovered a Lithuanian passport which preliminary checks indicated was fraudulent.

The document contained some of the woman’s personal details but was linked to an identity which police believe was not hers.

Further investigations indicated that the document she allegedly intended to present to Schengen and Gibraltar immigration authorities before boarding her flight to Britain contained irregularities and had been falsified.

Police also found a genuine Georgian passport among her belongings.

The woman was arrested and taken to New Mole House police station, where she was questioned by RGP officers.

She was later charged with an offence relating to the possession of an allegedly forged or irregular travel document and remained in custody ahead of an appearance at Gibraltar’s Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

The case will now be dealt with by Gibraltar’s courts.
