A young man has suffered a gruesome death after being crushed by a bin lorry compactor in Murcia.
The horrific incident happened in Cartagena in the early hours of Monday morning.
According to local newspaper La Opinion de Murcia, the victim was being sought by police over his alleged involvement in a violent robbery.
Investigators believe the man climbed inside a rubbish container on Calle Carlos III in an attempt to hide.
Shortly afterwards, a refuse collection vehicle arrived as part of its normal route.
The driver, who had no idea somebody was concealed inside, lifted the container and emptied its contents into the back of the lorry.
The victim then became trapped inside as the vehicle’s waste-compaction system was activated.
The worker quickly realised there was a person inside the compactor and turned it off, but the man had already been fatally crushed.
Paramedics rushed to the scene alongside the Policia Nacional but could do nothing to save him.
Firefighters were called in to recover the remains.
The bin lorry driver required medical attention after suffering an anxiety attack.
An investigation into the incident continues.
