The family of a British couple who were missing following the deadly Los Gallardos wildfire have confirmed they did not survive.
In a heartbreaking statement shared on Facebook, daughters Danielle Gillam-Kirton and Natalie Gillam Lindsay said they had received confirmation from police that their parents, Fran and Pete, had died in the blaze.
‘We are heartbroken to share that we have received confirmation from the police that Mum and Dad did not survive the fire,’ the statement read.
The family added that they were still trying to come to terms with the loss and asked for privacy as they processed the devastating news.
‘We are still trying to come to terms with this devastating news and ask for some privacy and time as we process everything.
‘Thank you for all your love, support, and prayers over the past few days. They have meant more to us than we can ever express.
‘We will share further details when we are able.’
The couple had been among those missing after Thursday’s fast-moving wildfire tore through the Los Gallardos area of Almeria, becoming one of Spain’s deadliest forest fires in recent years.
Spanish authorities have confirmed that 13 people lost their lives in the disaster, while search and identification work has continued over recent days.
Several of the victims are believed to have been foreign residents or visitors.
The wildfire, which erupted near Los Gallardos on Thursday, scorched around 7,000 hectares and prompted one of the largest firefighting operations ever seen in Almeria.
More than 400 firefighters, military personnel and emergency crews battled the blaze for days before it was finally stabilised on Sunday.
The disaster has shocked communities across Spain and the UK’s expat population, with tributes continuing to pour in for the victims.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire while forensic teams work to formally identify all those who lost their lives.
