Authorities have warned jet ski riders of eye-watering fines if they fail to follow the rules of the sea.
The warning comes after police in Malaga issued around 20 fines in a single day during a recent enforcement operation.
While many riders are responsible, officials say some continue to speed close to swimmers or enter designated bathing areas, putting lives at risk.
The rules every rider should know
Under Spanish maritime regulations, jet skis must follow strict operating rules, including:
- Stay at least 200 metres from the shoreline, except when launching or returning to the beach.
- When heading to or from shore, travel perpendicular to the beach, at low speed and with extreme caution.
- Do not enter buoyed swimming areas under any circumstances.
- Keep at least 50 metres away from other jet skis, boats or floating devices.
- Wear an approved life jacket at all times, including all passengers.
- Do not ride inside commercial ports, except where permitted in marinas.
- During organised jet ski excursions, overtaking is prohibited.
The most common offences
According to authorities, the most frequent infringements on the Costa del Sol include:
- Riding too close to the beach.
- Entering areas reserved for swimmers.
- Operating a jet ski without wearing a life jacket.
- Speeding while approaching or leaving the shore.
These offences can endanger bathers and other water users, particularly during the busy summer months.
How much are the fines?
Penalties vary depending on the seriousness of the offence.
Under Spain’s State Ports and Merchant Navy Law:
- Minor offences can result in fines of up to €60,000.
- Serious offences can carry penalties of up to €180,000 where maritime safety is affected, or €120,000 for breaches relating to maritime traffic regulations.
- In the most serious cases, particularly where there is a major risk to maritime safety, fines can reach €901,000.
The final amount depends on factors such as the level of danger created, the circumstances of the incident and whether the conduct placed other people at risk.
Authorities are urging anyone hiring or operating a jet ski this summer to familiarise themselves with the rules before heading out on the water, warning that a few moments of reckless behaviour could not only endanger lives but also result in a hefty financial penalty.
