A row between flatmates almost turned deadly in Estepona on Monday night when one of the two men involved was stabbed in the chest.
The kitchen knife used in the attack narrowly avoided the heart of the 37-year-old victim, who went into cardiac arrest several times.
Police officers and paramedics performed CPR for around 90 minutes before he could be stabilised.
The dramatic incident unfolded shortly after 8pm at a property in the Vista Golf residential complex, in Resinera-Voladilla.
Emergency service 112 Andalucia received a call reporting that a person had been attacked with a bladed weapon during a fight between two men at the property on Calle Juzcar.
The Policia Nacional and medical teams were immediately dispatched to the scene.
When officers arrived, they restrained the suspected attacker and placed him in handcuffs.
While one officer took charge of the suspect, another began desperately trying to help the wounded victim.
The man had suffered a stab wound in the area of his heart and was in a critical condition.
An officer applied pressure to the wound before joining paramedics in carrying out cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The lifesaving efforts continued for around an hour and a half as the victim repeatedly went into cardiac arrest.
Police said those at the scene managed to revive him several times and restore his vital signs.
A second ambulance carrying specialist equipment was eventually requested because of the severity of his condition.
Officers continued assisting medical staff and taking turns performing CPR until the man could finally be stabilised.
He was then evacuated as an emergency to Malaga’s Regional University Hospital for treatment.
During a search of the property, officers discovered what they believe was the weapon used in the attack in the bathroom sink.
The approximately 12cm-long kitchen knife was seized and will undergo forensic examination.
The investigation continues.
