A 16-year-old girl has claimed she was spiked before a group of men attempted to sexually assault her in Malaga.
The alleged attack occurred during San Juan celebrations in the early hours of Wednesday morning (June 24).
The teenager arrived at the emergency department of Malaga’s Regional Hospital at around 5am in a state of panic and disorientation.
According to initial reports, the girl believed someone may have put a substance in her drink before she was taken to nearby bushes where several individuals attempted to sexually assault her.
Medical staff treated the teenager before transferring her to the Materno Hospital, where specialist examinations are carried out under protocol in cases involving suspected sexual offences against minors.
Doctors will now determine whether there is forensic evidence to support her allegations.
The investigation remains at an early stage and no arrests have been announced.
The incident comes after thousands of people gathered on beaches across Malaga province overnight to celebrate San Juan, one of Spain’s biggest annual summer festivals.
Chemical submission, commonly known as drink-spiking, is frequently linked to sexual offences, although experts warn that proving such crimes can be difficult.
In many cases, substances leave the body within hours, victims have little or no memory of events and there may be few visible signs of violence due to the effects of the drugs.
