Andalucia recorded the highest temperatures in Spain on Monday as an intense heatwave tightened its grip on the region, with parts of Jaen exceeding 45C.
The hottest temperature in the country was recorded in Andujar (Jaen), where the mercury reached a scorching 45.1C.
Nearby Bailen followed with 44.2C, while Montoro in Cordoba hit 43.5C.
The figures comfortably surpassed temperatures recorded elsewhere in Spain, including Lleida and Quinto in Zaragoza, which both reached 42.9C.
Tropical nights
While daytime temperatures dominated headlines, overnight conditions were equally remarkable.
The hottest night in Spain was recorded at Cabo de Gata, where temperatures failed to drop below 31.5C.
The Almeria Airport weather station recorded a minimum temperature of 30.3C, while other Andalucian locations including Cazorla, Jaen city, Carboneras and Ronda experienced overnight temperatures between 27C and 29C.
According to state weather agency Aemet, this marks an unprecedented event.

‘Until 2026, minimum temperatures of 30C or more had never been recorded in June on mainland Spain,’ the agency noted.
More than 100 stations above 40C
Nationally, Aemet reported that 101 of Spain’s 828 weather stations exceeded 40C on Monday.
During the following night, more than 30 stations remained above 25C, highlighting the exceptional persistence of the heat.
Parts of Almeria’s coastline have now recorded temperatures above 30C for three consecutive nights.
Andalucia accounted for many of the highest daytime and nighttime temperatures recorded nationwide, with Almeria, Jaen and Malaga among the provinces most affected by unusually warm nights.
Meteorologists say the combination of extreme daytime heat and exceptionally high overnight temperatures is one of the most concerning aspects of the current episode, as it leaves little opportunity for buildings and people to cool down before the next day’s heat arrives.
Authorities continue to urge residents and tourists to avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours, stay hydrated and take extra care with children, the elderly and vulnerable people as temperatures remain well above seasonal averages.
