A major new electricity substation has officially entered service in San Pedro de Alcantara.
Marbella Town Hall hailed the project as a crucial step in supporting residential and economic expansion.
It comes after a series of blackouts in certain urbanisations in recent weeks, including Guadalmina.
Mayor Angeles Muñoz said the infrastructure will strengthen the local power network, improve reliability and ensure sufficient capacity for thousands of new homes and businesses.
The project stems from an agreement signed in 2020, when Marbella Town Hall transferred a 2,500-square-metre municipal plot to allow construction of the facility.
According to Muñoz, the move was designed to anticipate future demand and avoid the energy capacity problems that are increasingly affecting development projects elsewhere on the Costa del Sol.
‘Many projects across the Costa del Sol are currently being limited by a lack of available energy capacity,’ the mayor said, adding that the new installation will help guarantee supply in areas including San Pedro Alcantara and Nueva Andalucia.
The substation has an initial capacity of 80 MVA (megavolt-amperes), with plans for a future expansion to 120 MVA.
The increased capacity is expected to support major developments including the Ensanche Este de San Pedro, Nueva Alcantara, La Campana-Guadaiza, San Pedro Industrial Estate and the JKL-Lago de las Tortugas area.

Officials estimate the infrastructure will serve more than 60,000 residents while improving the stability and reliability of the electricity network by reducing outages and strengthening supply for homes and businesses.
The project represents an investment of more than €9.3million by Endesa, working alongside private firms including Sistem Melesur and Real La Quinta.
As part of the works, a new 66-kilovolt underground high-voltage connection has been installed, together with more than 12km of underground electrical distribution network.
Additional connection works are still ongoing and will link the substation to various supply points across the municipality.
Muñoz described the launch as an important milestone for Marbella’s future growth.
‘The commissioning of this substation guarantees electricity supply for thousands of families, businesses and future developments, while strengthening Marbella’s competitiveness and ability to continue growing,’ she said.
