The PSOE has warned that LGBTQ+ rights in Andalucia could come under threat if the Partido Popular (PP) reaches a governing agreement with Vox following the recent regional election.
Speaking in Sevilla during an event marking Pride Month, PSOE spokesperson at Sevilla City Council Antonio Muñoz claimed that acting regional president Juanma Moreno is preparing to make concessions to the hard-right party in order to secure his re-election as head of the Junta de Andalucia.
Muñoz made the remarks during a flag-raising ceremony and the reading of a manifesto in support of LGBTQ+ rights at the PSOE-A headquarters in the Andalucian capital.
The socialist politician accused Moreno of putting hard-won freedoms at risk by relying on Vox for political support, arguing that agreements between mainstream conservative parties and the far right frequently result in attempts to roll back equality measures.
‘There are very serious threats to rights that were achieved through laws introduced by socialist governments,’ Muñoz said, warning that any future pact could weaken protections for LGBTQ+ people and equality policies more broadly.
He also accused the PP of prioritising political deals over social progress, alleging that equality policies were being downgraded to satisfy Vox’s demands.
The PSOE representative called on people to take part in public demonstrations and awareness campaigns, particularly aimed at younger generations, to defend existing rights and freedoms.
Muñoz also criticised what he described as a contradiction between the PP’s public support for Pride-related events and its voting record on LGBTQ+ initiatives.
He pointed specifically to recent debates in Sevilla City Counvil, claiming the PP had voted against proposals including awareness campaigns in neighbourhoods and measures to strengthen the city’s LGBTQ+ council.
The comments come amid ongoing political negotiations in Andalucia, where the composition of the next regional government remains uncertain and where any formal agreement between the PP and Vox is likely to attract intense scrutiny from both supporters and critics.
The PP has not responded to Muñoz’s latest remarks, but party leaders have consistently rejected accusations that cooperation with Vox would undermine civil rights protections.
