Drivers across Spain are finally getting some relief at the pumps, with diesel prices falling sharply this week after a series of increases linked to tensions in the Middle East.
According to the latest data from the European Union’s Oil Bulletin, the average price of diesel has dropped by 2.2% over the past seven days to €1.648 per litre, its lowest level since March.
The fall follows a period of sustained increases triggered by instability in the Strait of Hormuz and wider tensions involving Iran, Israel and the US, which pushed global oil prices higher and raised concerns over fuel supplies.
Petrol prices have also started to ease. After four consecutive weeks of increases, the average price of unleaded petrol fell by 1.34% this week to €1.547 per litre, marking its lowest level since mid-May.
At current prices, filling a typical 55-litre diesel tank costs around €90.64, while the same-sized petrol tank costs approximately €85.08.
Despite the recent declines, drivers are still paying considerably more than they were a year ago. Filling a diesel vehicle now costs around €15.50 more than in 2025, while petrol drivers are paying almost €5 extra per tank.
The price drops come after the Spanish government introduced a package of emergency measures in March aimed at limiting the impact of rising energy costs.
These included reducing VAT on petrol and diesel to 10%, cutting fuel duties to the minimum level permitted under EU rules and providing targeted support for the transport and agricultural sectors.
The measures were introduced after more than 10 weeks of almost uninterrupted fuel price rises and are currently scheduled to remain in force until June 30.
While motorists may have noticed higher prices in recent months, fuel remains significantly cheaper than during the energy crisis of 2022.
At the peak of that crisis, petrol prices exceeded €2.14 per litre while diesel approached €2.10 per litre, both substantially higher than current levels.
Spanish drivers continue to benefit from some of the lowest fuel prices in western Europe.
The average price of unleaded petrol in Spain remains well below the European Union average of €1.847 per litre and the eurozone average of €1.908.
Diesel is also cheaper than elsewhere on the continent, with the EU average standing at €1.843 per litre and the eurozone average at €1.896.
For now, motorists will be hoping the latest downward trend continues as summer travel season gets underway.
