A major anti-terror operation carried out by the Policia Nacional has led to the arrest of 10 people across southeastern Spain.
The investigation is being coordinated by the Audiencia Nacional, according to sources cited by Europa Press.
Those arrested are understood to be citizens from Eastern Europe and were detained in several municipalities including Alicante city, Xixona and areas around Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa in the Vega Baja region – all areas hugely popular with British expats and tourists.
The operation involved a large-scale security deployment led by officers from the General Information Commissariat, Spain’s specialist intelligence and counter-terrorism branch.
Elite units including the GEO special operations group also took part in the raids.
Authorities have not yet released details about the specific nature of the alleged terrorist activity being investigated, and the case remains under judicial secrecy.
However, sources confirmed the suspects are accused of terrorism-related offences alongside other alleged crimes.
The detainees are expected to appear before the Audiencia Nacional on Friday.
Spain remains on a heightened terrorism alert level and has carried out numerous counter-terrorism operations in recent years targeting suspected extremist networks, organised cells and international radicalisation groups.
