A man has been filmed beating his ex-girlfriend’s cat to death in the middle of the street in Spain.
The incident happened on Monday in Torrevieja, where the suspect is accused of kicking and striking the animal with a stick in broad daylight.
He has since been arrested by the Guardia Civil, with Local Police charging him with animal abuse.
The killing, which was witnessed and filmed by members of the public, has sparked outrage across the community.
Torrevieja Town Hall issued a statement condemning the attack ‘absolutely’, describing the killing as a deeply disturbing act.
‘We express our sincere shock and reaffirm our commitment to animal protection and the absolute rejection of any form of abuse,’ the council said, adding that it stands with animal welfare groups following the ‘deplorable’ incident.
Local residents have also reacted with anger, particularly because the attack took place in a public space and in full view of witnesses.

Animal welfare group Proyecto CES Gatos Torrevieja said the case is ‘the worst we have seen in a long time.’
‘Our hearts are broken,’ they said. ‘We demand that the person responsible pays for what they’ve done. This cannot end with just a fine.’
Serious legal consequences
Under Spanish law, killing a pet in this way is considered a serious animal abuse offence.
Those found guilty can face prison sentences of up to two years, with harsher penalties possible if aggravating factors such as cruelty are proven.
In addition, fines can range from €50,000 to €200,000 in severe cases.
The investigation continues.
