Star matador Andres Roca Rey has been seriously injured after being gored in Sevilla’s Real Maestranza bullring, according to an official medical report.
The incident happened while he was performing with the fifth bull of the event on Thursday evening.
During his routine, the animal suddenly charged and caught him on his horns before throwing him up into the air, inflicting a deep wound to the upper inner part of his right thigh.
Doctors confirmed the horn wound extended 35cm, with two trajectories – one descending and another ascending.
The gash caused significant damage to key muscles, including the vastus medialis and sartorius.
There was also near-complete impact to the femoral neurovascular bundle, although crucially, no major blood vessels were ruptured.
Medical teams acted immediately in the arena’s infirmary. The wound was surgically cleaned, and bleeding from smaller vessels was controlled using haemostatic agents.
Doctors then inserted drains and carried out reconstruction of the affected muscle and tissue layers.
Following the initial treatment, Roca Rey was transferred to a hospital in Sevilla for further care.
His condition has been officially classified as ‘very serious’, according to the report signed by surgeon Octavio Mulet Zayas on April 23.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by bullfighters in the ring, even at the highest level of the sport.
It comes after Sevilla-born icon Morante de la Puebla this week suffered a brutal goring to the anus.
The matador faces a grim 10-day stint in hospital after the bull’s horn perforated his rectum.
The wound was at least 10cm wide, with doctors describing his surgery as ‘very complex’.
