A local in Malaga has blasted tourism in the city for ‘turning his home into London’.
Under the Instagram name Richard_dtn, the Malagueño uploaded a video of himself walking with his toddler son through the city centre.
He captioned the clip: ‘Walking through the centre of Malaga but you never see a local.’
He says in the video: ‘I’m walking through the centre with my son… and I’ve realised that I haven’t seen one single Spaniard throughout the whole walk.
‘It feels like me and my son are in London, well, London with sun.’
He said he feared in the future it will just be filled with ‘guiris’, branding the situation ‘crazy’.
The video has been flooded with hundreds of comments, with opinions divided.
‘If Malaga lives off of tourism, what do you expect?’, one Spanish commenter said.
Another added: ‘And what do you want? Do you never go on vacation? What are they doing to you?’
One local rubbished the claims in the video, writing: ‘Well, you must be blind because I work in a notary’s office and there are always people from Malaga and Spaniards there.’
However, many agreed with the uploader, claiming the Costa del Sol city has been ‘turned into a theme park.’
‘Every time I go… It’s astounding, what the kid says is true… They’ve robbed us of Malaga,’ one fumed.
Another added: ‘We, the people of Malaga, have disappeared from the city centre.’
The video comes as new anti-tourism graffiti has appeared on the outskirts of the city.
On a motorway sign on the A-7, one message reads: ‘No tourist, Malaga para vivir’ (Malaga for living).
There has been a noticeable uptick in anti-tourism graffiti on the Costa del Sol in the past few weeks, as the holiday hotspot gears up for the summer season.
It comes after last year saw the highest number of protests against the industry to date nationwide.
Activists claim ‘overtourism’ is contributing to the housing crisis, while depleting local resources, among other concerns.
