Zohran Mamdani has urged progressive leaders to unite on a global scale to tackle inequality and mounting international crises.
The New York mayor made the call in a message delivered to the Barcelona summit of left-leaning politicians.
Speaking via a pre-recorded video at the Global Progressive Mobilisation event, Mamdani warned that the world is facing a convergence of challenges that require coordinated action.
‘At a time when we see too many crises and conflicts around the world, it is essential that progressive leaders come together,’ he said, while thanking Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sánchez for hosting the gathering.
Inequality at the heart of global concerns
Mamdani placed particular emphasis on income inequality, describing it as one of the defining issues of the current era.
He pointed to his own city as a stark example.
Despite governing what he described as ‘the most expensive city in the United States,’ Mamdani said the struggles faced by New Yorkers are mirrored across the globe – especially when it comes to housing.
‘When I hear about New Yorkers struggling to live in the most expensive city in the United States, I don’t just hear local stories,’ he said. ‘I hear the stories of working people all over the world.’
Housing crisis echoes worldwide
The mayor highlighted soaring rents and the growing difficulty of accessing housing as a shared international problem, linking it directly to broader economic inequality.
‘This crisis is not unique to our city,’ he added. ‘It has become a reality for far too many people worldwide.’
His remarks come at a time when cities across Europe – including hotspots like the Costa del Sol – are grappling with similar pressures driven by rising property prices and limited supply.
Call to ‘walk the path together’
Mamdani closed his intervention with a call for collective action, urging progressive movements to work together to ‘combat and defeat inequality’.
His message reinforced the broader tone of the Barcelona summit, where leaders have sought to present a united front on issues ranging from economic disparity to geopolitical instability.
