‘Foreign drug driver’ kills motorcyclist, 18, on Costa del Sol’s ‘road of death’

A ‘foreign national’ has been arrested following a fatal collision with an 18-year-old motorcyclist in Malaga.

The unnamed suspect, aged 23, is reported to have tested positive for drugs after handing himself into the Guardia Civil.

The horror collision occurred at around 5.30pm on Monday on the infamous A-355, which connects inland Malaga with Marbella on the Costa del Sol.

It has been dubbed the ‘carretera de la muerte’ (road of death), due to the high number of fatal accidents in recent years.

The victim, from Monda, named as Daniel, died instantly when his motorcycle collided with a car between kilometre points 12 and 13 of the road.

According to sources quoted by Malaga Hoy, the driver of the car fled the scene, leaving the young motorcyclist dead on the asphalt.

The man later surrendered to the Guardia Civil in Coin and subsequently tested positive for drugs.

Investigators confirmed he is a foreign national, and are now verifying whether he held a valid driving licence in Spain.

Initial emergency calls reported a crash between a car and a motorbike, but firefighters from Coin later confirmed that three cars were involved.

The vehicle allegedly responsible for the crash crossed into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the motorbike. After the impact, those inside the car fled, before the driver handed himself in hours later.

Three other people suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, while some of the car’s occupants were later found at Alhaurin el Grande health centre, according to investigators.

The Guardia Civil is continuing to reconstruct the incident and assess potential criminal charges for reckless driving and failure to assist.

The A-355, a 42km road linking Marbella and Coin, has become notorious for its fatal accidents. In the past two years alone, 12 people have died in around 30 crashes, 10 of them in 2023 alone.

To combat the danger, authorities painted a thick red line between the double continuous lines on 21 kilometres of the route, reinforcing the no-overtaking rule.

The road is notorious for speeding hence the red lines. Other measures to reduce speed need to be considered either more cameras, roundabouts or even speed humps as clearly with very little if anything in place the red line is insufficient.
