The Costa del Sol and wider Malaga province are set to enjoy highs of 32C this week, beginning on Monday.
The areas expected to see the highest temperatures include municipalities around the Guadalhorce Valley and La Axarquia.
The conditions are being brought by the terral, a hot wind the blows down to the coast from the inland.
Night-time temperatures won’t offer much relief either, with tropical conditions keeping minimums well above 20C deep into the week.
‘It’s 4C hotter than what would normally be expected for this time of year,’ said Jesus Riesgo, head of Spain’s state meteorology agency AEMET, comparing this year’s heat to the 1991–2020 reference period.
The seasonal norm for October should be around 24.4C, but this week’s highs will sit five to six degrees above that.
While this level of heat used to be considered an anomaly in autumn, it’s now becoming part of the seasonal pattern.
The warmest October on record in Malaga province occurred in 2013, with an average of 21.9C, while the all-time October maximum was set on 22 October 2014 at 36.3C. Whether 2025 will topple those records remains to be seen.
Elsewhere in Andalucia, similar record-breaking autumn temperatures are expected, as the unseasonal heatwave spreads across the south.
While still uncertain, there’s growing hope among meteorologists that a cool front could arrive by Sunday October 26, possibly bringing rainfall to break the dry streak.
