It came after an emergency was declared on nearby Lanzarote on Saturday afternoon as flash floods wrought havoc on the Canary island.

The worst hit areas in Tenerife are in the north of the island and the metropolitan area.

Authorities issued extreme caution for the north and areas including Santa Cruz and La Laguna.

Northern Tenerife and parts of Anaga were placed under a yellow warning for heavy rain for much of Saturday.

The rough weather conditions saw several events suspended, including the Race for ALS charity run.

Meanwhile, the deluge caused dangerous driving conditions, particularly on the Northern Highway (TF-5), where visibility was significantly reduced by rain and fog since from 2pm this Saturday.
