Drivers on the Costa del Sol are being warned about a new text message scam falsely claiming unpaid toll charges on the AP-7 motorway.
The alert comes after several users reported receiving suspicious messages impersonating Spain’s traffic authority, Direccion General de Trafico (DGT).
The fraudulent SMS – often sent from a sender labelled ‘DGTInfo’ – tells recipients they have an unpaid toll on the AP-7 motorway.
It includes specific details such as the vehicle’s make, model and registration number, along with a supposed outstanding amount.
Recipients are then urged to pay within 24 hours or face a €200 fine, with a shortened link directing them to a fake payment site.
Official warning: do not click
The motorway operator Ausol, which manages sections between Malaga, Marbella and Guadiaro, has confirmed the messages are completely false.
Drivers are being strongly advised not to click on any links or provide personal or payment details.
How fines are really issued
The DGT has reiterated that traffic fines are never sent via SMS or email.
Official notifications are only issued by post or through the government’s secure online system, the Dirección Electrónica Vial.
Authorities are urging anyone who receives one of these messages to ignore it, and report it, as part of a wider effort to crack down on smishing scams targeting drivers across Spain.
