A 25-year-old man has been shot dead in Torrevieja in the latest gun attack to hit the Costa Blanca town.
The fatal shooting took place at around 10.30pm on Saturday on Calle Bergantin, a largely residential area near Playa del Cura.
Multiple gunshots were heard by neighbours, prompting an immediate response from Guardia Civil and Local Police units.
Officers arriving at the scene found the victim – an Algerian national – lying dead in the street.
His body remained covered at the scene before it was taken away for an autopsy.
The Guardia Civil has launched a full investigation under the direction of a Torrevieja court.
According to sources close to the case, the individuals involved were of North African origin and are believed to have had prior disputes, with previous altercations reported.
The incident has heightened anxiety among locals, many of whom say there is a growing sense of insecurity in the town.
In early March, a 33-year-old Czech national was shot dead in the Rocio del Mar area, while last year a Turkish man was gunned down in central Torrevieja in what was linked to a suspected gang-related score-settling.
The latest killing has once again put pressure on authorities to boost security in the municipality, which now has a population well above 100,000.
Torrevieja still lacks a Policia Nacional presence, relying instead on Guardia Civil and Local Police forces.
