An off-duty police officer has been dragged 30 metres by a car after trying to stop two handbag thieves in Estepona.
The Marbella-based officer suffered a head injury when he fell to the ground and was taken to the Costa del Sol Hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
He had been visiting a supermarket with his partner when he spotted two men working together to steal a woman’s handbag in the car park.
According to the police account, one distracted the woman while the other took her belongings.
The officer challenged the pair, but they ran towards a vehicle with the stolen bag.
He pursued them and grabbed the car’s window opening in an attempt to restrain the passenger.
The driver accelerated, dragging the officer along the road. The occupants allegedly hit his hands to force him to let go and pushed him until he fell, hitting his head.
He remains under observation in hospital, suffering dizziness following the impact.
Both suspects escaped and initial enquiries suggest they were using a rented vehicle.
The investigation continues.
